Biotin is one of the best-selling hair supplements on the market, and it does have a genuine EU-authorised claim behind it. The trouble is the claim says something narrower than what's printed on most bottles — and there's a safety footnote almost nobody mentions.
The claim that's actually authorised
EFSA's authorised claim is that biotin contributes to the maintenance of normal hair — alongside separate claims for normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal skin and mucous membranes, and normal function of the nervous system.[1] "Maintenance" and "growth" aren't the same word, and the gap between them is where most of the marketing lives.
Why deficiency is really the deciding factor
For most adults eating a reasonably varied UK diet, biotin deficiency is genuinely uncommon. It happens — certain genetic conditions, long-term anticonvulsant use, and some other specific circumstances raise the risk — but it isn't the default state most people reaching for a bottle are actually in. A 2024 review looking specifically at biotin and hair loss found that the evidence for benefit is strongest in people who are actually deficient; in people who aren't, results are inconsistent at best.[2]

What happens when you're not actually deficient
A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial specifically testing biotin supplementation for hair growth found no meaningful difference between the biotin group and placebo.[2] High-dose biotin isn't dangerous in the way some supplements can be, but it also isn't a proven growth accelerant once an actual shortfall has been ruled out — it's closer to a precaution than a guarantee.
The safety note almost nobody mentions
Here's the part that rarely makes it onto a supplement label: the FDA has warned that high-dose biotin (broadly, 5mg/5,000mcg and above) can interfere with common lab blood tests, including thyroid panels and troponin tests used to help diagnose heart attacks — potentially producing a falsely reassuring result on a test that matters.[3] This isn't a reason to panic about a daily supplement, but it is a reason to mention it before you're tested.
- Tell your doctor or phlebotomist you take a high-dose biotin supplement before any blood test, not just if asked.
- This matters most for thyroid panels and troponin/cardiac tests — the tests most documented for biotin interference.
- Ask about pausing beforehand — your GP or the testing lab can advise how many days out is sensible for your specific test.
So does it actually help?
If you're genuinely deficient, correcting that shortfall is exactly what the authorised claim covers, and it's a reasonable thing to try. If you're not, the evidence doesn't currently back extra hair growth from extra biotin — the main real downside is the lab-test interference above, not the supplement itself.
