What psyllium husk actually is
Psyllium husk comes from the seeds of Plantago ovata, and it's roughly 70% soluble fibre. Mixed with water, it forms a thick, viscous gel β that gel-forming property is the entire mechanism behind everything it does, from bowel regularity to cholesterol.
The claims that are actually authorised
Psyllium husk carries two separate EFSA-authorised health claims, which puts it in fairly select company. At 10g a day, it's authorised for contributing to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels. Separately, it's authorised for contributing to normal bowel function through its effect on stool bulk and frequency.[1] Both are backed by consistent meta-analysis data β cholesterol-lowering studies at the 7-10g/day range show LDL reductions in roughly the 5-10% range, working by binding bile acids in the gut so the liver has to pull more cholesterol out of circulation to replace them.[2]

The bowel function side is the more immediate one
For regularity specifically, psyllium works as a bulk-forming, non-stimulant fibre β it increases stool water content and bulk mechanically, rather than stimulating the gut the way a laxative like senna does. Controlled feeding studies comparing high-fibre to control diets found measurably more frequent bowel movements on the higher-fibre version. It's a gentler mechanism than magnesium citrate's osmotic approach, and one that doesn't come with the same urgency or unpredictability.
How to actually take it without it backfiring
The gel-forming mechanism that makes psyllium useful is also the reason it needs careful handling. Three things actually matter:
- Drink enough water β taking it without enough liquid is the main way people end up with bloating or a sense of blockage, rather than the improvement they were after.
- Start low and build up β begin with a smaller dose than the target and increase gradually over a week or two rather than jumping straight to 10g, since a fast increase in any fibre tends to cause gas and bloating that a slower ramp-up mostly avoids.
- Space it from medication β take it at a different time to anything else you're on, since the gel can interfere with how well other things are absorbed if taken at the same moment.
